Tunisia Sees 81% Surge in Mobile Payments in 2025, Central Bank Reports
In 2025, Tunisia’s payment landscape experienced a remarkable transformation as mobile payments and transfers surged by 81% compared to the previous year. This significant increase was highlighted in the Central Bank of Tunisia’s (BCT) “Bulletin N°15,” which underscores the country’s rapid shift toward a digital economy.
The total volume of mobile transactions reached 8.4 million operations, representing a value of 1,769 million Tunisian Dinar (TND). This growth was supported by the expansion of Tunisia’s digital ecosystem. The number of digital wallets in use rose to 815,000, up from 595,000 in 2024, while the network of Payment Service Providers (PSPs) expanded to 435 entities, up from 368 the previous year. Money transfers and merchant payments were the main drivers of this activity, with transfers accounting for 50.7% of transactions and payments representing 17.8%.
The Central Bank of Tunisia attributed this “explosive growth” to several strategic initiatives aimed at reducing cash dependency and promoting financial inclusion. Key measures included the integration of the E-Houwiya digital identity system with the Paysmart platform, which streamlined secure transaction verification. Additionally, modernization projects such as the migration to the SWIFT MX (ISO 20022) standard and the redesign of the National Clearing System supported the broader digital shift.
